Minneapolis, Minn. (December 3, 2009) – Liberty Diversified International (LDI), has been named winner of the Global Market award in the Minnesota Family Business Awards competition.
The Minnesota Family Business Awards are sponsored by several state business organizations, including Bremer Bank, Minnesota Business magazine and the University of St. Thomas’ Center for Family Enterprise.
The award recognized LDI’s expansion of its paper and packaging businesses globally, along with its recent acquisition of Ergolet, a Danish maker of patient transfer products, and its investment in a machine tool business in Taiwan.
LDI’s original businesses were in the corrugated packaging and paper industries, but the company now operates in several additional markets: Workplace environments and furnishings, building products, precision machines, and patient transfer products for the healthcare field. LDI changed its name from Liberty Diversified Industries to Liberty Diversified International earlier this year to reflect its growing global presence.
Michael Fiterman has been CEO of 1,500-employee LDI since 1983, when he succeeded his father, Ben Fiterman. The company was founded in 1918 by Mike’s grandfather, Jack Fiterman. Today, two of Mike’s children, Jack Fiterman and Ann Miller, serve on the company’s executive board while also performing key roles in LDI companies.
“Family-owned businesses are a critical part of the past and future of the American economy, and we thank the award sponsors for recognizing the contributions of family businesses,” he said. Earlier this year, Mike Fiterman was named to the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame.
